Shirley was born in Berkley, California, the daughter of Raymond and Erene (Racine) Wamsley. She graduated Paso Robles High School, and then studied Interior Design at San Francisco State University, before moving to Honolulu, Hawaii. While in Hawaii, she met and married her husband, 1st Lt Henry (Hank) John Wereszynski, US Army, in 1956. They shared 58 years together before Hank died in 2014. Shirley was an interior designer, and then raised two children while serving as a devoted Army wife. The family moved around the country and to Germany in support of Hank's army career, eventually settling in Monterey, California. Shirley was an excellent cook, and they enjoyed entertaining in their many homes around the world. While Hank was stationed at Fort Ord, Shirley served as the President of the Officers' Wives Club (OWC), and chaired the OWC Annual Bazaar, raising thousands of dollars for their scholarship fund. An accomplished artist, Shirley displayed and sold her watercolor paintings at the Naval Post Graduate School Art Gallery, becoming well-known for her paintings of the Lone Cypress and other Monterey Peninsula landmarks. She volunteered for many years as a docent at the Monterey Aquarium, sharing the wonders of the Monterey Bay with visitors from the United States and around the world. Shirley is survived by her son Stephen Wereszynski (and wife Virginia) of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and son-in-law Brad Conger of Monterey; five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; and her sister Susan Wamsley Reese. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, her daughter Karen Marie Conger, and her brother Charles Edward Wamsley. A celebration of her life, and interment, will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts be given to the Monterey Aquarium.
