• Obituary: Laconia Democrat, 3 Feb 1893, Laconia, Belknap Co, NH. ¹²⁸⁸⁴ James Judkins, ex-chief of the Laconia police force died at his residence on Dixon Street, Wednesday morning, of diabetes. Mr. Judkins was forty four years of age and a native of Danville, Vermont. He came to Lacnoia about twenty years ago, and for some time was employed at the Laconia Car Works. He served ten years on the police force, retiring about four years ago. Of late years he has served as a night watchman, first the car shops and later at J.W. Busiel & Co.'s mills. He was taken ill Christmas night, but apparently recovered and went out some two weeks ago, taking cold and then being confined to his bed. He leaves a widow and two children. Judkins was a member of Winnipesoegee Lodge and Laconia Encampment of Odd Fellows, and was also a member of the Laconia Fire Department, having been connected with the Steamer Co. for quite a number of years.

In his early history of the Laconia Police Department, Chief John Guay recalled of Judkins, "In all his battles and he had a great many, he always came out on top and, as far as I know, never failed to land his man. He lived over the old fire engine house on Water Street and when needed in the daytime had to be called, but as the officer at that time received the fees for making arrests, he didn't have to be called twice."
