From The WIlmington Morning Star, Wilmington NC, dated 8 Jan 1887: citing Fayetteville Obsever-Gazette: On Monday, the 3d inst., Mr. Elias Gainey, an aged and highly esteemed citizen of this county, died at the residence of his son, Mr. Noel Gainey, on the east side of the Cape Fear river. [This could be either Elias Gainey son of Bartholomew, or Elias Gainey son of Abraham. Since Elias is in Sampson County, it is probably son of Bartholomew.]

This is the only 1840 Census entry for a Gainey in Cumberland or Sampson Co that includes a male 30-40.

In 1840 Census, Elias should be about 34. These are the other Gainey census entries, but they do not contain a male 30-40. Note that Elias is not married yet, so is probably still living with his parents:

They all sell to W E Gainey half interest in a tract conveyed by Elias Gainey to W E Gainey and J A Gainey by deed dated 3 Sept 1883. Part paid now, part paid later. Land borders Codes tract, Newbern Road, canal, Campbell, Mullins, east edge of Flat Swamp. Land was conveyed to W E and J A Gainey by Elias Gainey. (Cumberland Co Deed book 82, p529)

W J D Haywood of Cumberland Co is indebted to R T Spencer and wife of Harnett Co for $450, so he exchanges 75 acres, which is the western portion of the 200 acre Elias Gainey tract, and is also the portion on which the Gainey residence in situated.
