DURHAM - Martha Jane Councilman Maness passed away peacefully in Raleigh, on March 12, 2006. She was born in Bonlee, on September 30, 1925 to the late John Manley Councilman and Oppie Jane Beal Councilman. She was predeceased by her husband Floyd Newton Maness, in 1983, and by her 11 siblings. She is survived by her two daughters, Cathy Maness Ward and husband, James O. Ward, of Raleigh, and Linda Maness Fletcher and husband, Jan C. Fletcher, of Henderson; six grandchildren, James Ward, Catharine Ward and Elizabeth Ward, of Raleigh, Amanda Fletcher, Blake Fletcher and Stuart Fletcher, of Henderson. Martha was a longtime resident of Durham. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother and dearly loved. She was an active member of St. Paul United Methodist Church and her UMW Circle, a Sunday nursery school teacher and a past president of the Durham Civinette Club. The family would like to thank her caregivers at Sunnybrook Nursing Home for their thoughtful and loving care during her last difficult years. A memorial service to celebrate her life and love will be held at 3 p.m. on March 14, 2006 at St. Paul United Methodist Church, Durham. Following the service, the family will welcome friends in the church Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to St. Paul United Methodist Church, 2700 North Roxboro Road, Durham, NC 27704.
