(e-mail from Shirley Councilman Lindley on 22 Sept 2007) One of Uncle Newby's sons told me that Wilburn got into a fight and injured someone, and since he was a professional boxer he was afraid he would get into legal trouble, so he joined the merchant marine in order to get out of the country. However, do not include that story in your website because Uncle Odell said he never heard that and didn't believe it. I am telling you in order to illustrate my belief that his boxing days came before his merchant marine days.

I do not know whether he boxed in the merchant marine. I believe he boxed under the name of Speedy Thompson. His weight class was lightweight or maybe even bantam weight; he was not tall and not heavy.
