  Noted events in his life were:

1. Military Service: Revolutionary War Soldier. 364 Commanded a company of Cavalry Rangers under Col. William Thompson, that fought at Cane Brake, December 22, 1775. He rose to the rank of colonel. Served in the defense of Sullivan's Island and was at the battle of Rayborn Creek, July 15, 1776.

2. Story, 1790. 364 After the war, Polk's atheist beliefs brought him increasing conflicts with his neighbors. By 1790 he removed his immediate family to Tennessee, becoming one of the pioneers in the area that is now Hardeman County.
