Jeanette was scalded by hot water that spilled from the stove while visiting her Haywood grandparents. Her mother Gladys Lindley and grandmother Lella Haywood had gone to church; Jeanette was home with her grandfather Oscar Haywood. When Jeanette went to the hospital in Fayetteville, she contracted red measles and erysipelas [an acute disease of the skin marked by spreading inflamation and fever]. She died from those complications.

5. Obituary: Burlington Daily Times, 14 Apr 1931, Burlington, Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. 1921 "Little Lindley Girl Died Yesterday". Jeannette Downing Lindley, 19 months old daughter of Prof. and Mrs Charles C. Lindley, of this place, died yesterday afternoon at 3:30 in Pittman hospital, Fayetteville where she had been the past five weeks, suffering form complications following accidental scalding. Her mother had gone there for a visit.
Funeral service was held this afternoon at 2:30 at the First M. P. church with Dr. F. W. Paschall in charge, and interment was made in Pine Hill cemetery.
Surviving are the parents and three grandparents: W. F. Lindley, Saxapahaw; and Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Haywood, of Fayetteville.
