7. Story, 1875. 776 In 1875, Thaddeus and Mary were charter members of First Baptist Church at Mt Gilead, coming from New Union church. Thadeus was the superintendent of the Sunday school.

Living with him are wife Mary (46, housekeeping), son Pressly (20, farm laborer), son Elias (18, farm laborer), son Allen (15, farm laborer), daughter Annie (12), daughter Fannie (10), and son Cahill (2). 9. Property, Cir Jun 1888, Montgomery County, North Carolina, United States. Father William Haywood's will mentions son Thaddeus F. Haywood. Thaddeus received "the remaining half of the William Robinson land, the other half being [???] before bequeathed to my son Jesse also a tract known as the James Byrd land containing originaly eighty three acres, sixty [???] acres now, 15 [?] acres having been sold to James Martin. Also two hundred dollars United States currency." Thaddeus was the executor of the will.

13. Story. 777 Thaddeus's farm is described in "Pattern of Timeless Moments, a History of Montgomery County". The article about his farm is in a Word document.

14. Story. In 1974, the first woman elected to the First Baptist Church board of Deacons was Miss Frances Haywood, granddaughter of T.F.Haywood. (from files at Montgomery County Library, Troy).

15. Story. 778 Thaddeus was a prominent planter and landlord. He grew up on the Haywood plantation 4 miles east of Mt Gilead. He operated an extensive plantation with vast acres under cultivation and sprawling tracts of timberland. He built his farm into a community center that included a general store, cotton gin, large smokehouse, post office (Onward, NC) and even the Haywood School on the premises where both he and Mrs Haywood conducted classes. He served as County Commissioner from 2 Dec 1878-1880, and had to travel to Troy on horseback each month to attend the meetings. He was a charter member of Mt Gilead Baptist Church, and he served as its first Clerk for 20 years, its first Sunday School Superintendent for 16 years and one of the first two deacons. For many years, he was Treasurer of the Montgomery Baptist Association. He served during the War Between the States, but when discharged he walked from Salisbury to rejoin his wife and children.
