1. Obituary, 9 Nov 2003. Emily Mae Sargent Councilman, 95, departed this life on Friday, Nov 7, 2003, at White Oak Manor of Burlington where she resided. She was predeceased by her husband the Rev. Robert Lacy Councilman; and only one daughter, Emily Mae Councilman Chafin. Emily [the subject] was born in Zion, Ill., in 1908. Her parents, Joseph Smith Sargent and Caroline Josephine Franken Sargent, established their home in Hendersonville, NC, where Emily was reared with her three sisters and one brother. One sister, Martha (C.B.) Turner, Johnson City, TN, survives as do two beloved grandchildren, Chris (Beth) Chafin of Garner, NC, and Betsy (Mitch) Chafin Kye of King, NC; four great-grandchildren, Ashley and Alexandra Chafin and Erin and Pierson Kye; along with their grandfather, Neil Chafin of Winston-Salem; and numerous relatives and friends, including Carol Chase, Becky Chavez, Elizabeth Cleary and Eve Shy. Emily was a graduate of Salem College and majored in violin. She further studied violin in New York City. She taught music at the NC School for the Blind from 1930 to 1933 and maintained her music ministry at various Baptist churches in North Carolina. Emily was an award-winning renowned poet and mentor to aspiring as well as accomplished writers. She has left her writings to the Guilford College Friends Historical Collection. At the time of her death, Emily was a member of the Friendship Friends Meeting (Quaker) of Greensboro. Previously she was a member at various Baptist church families where her husband served as pastor, including Burlington area churches: First Baptist, Northside Baptist and Glenco Baptist.
