Inscription says: SACRED/ To the Memory of/ ROBERT WALKUP,/ born June 25th 1780,/ and died Sept. 22nd 1846,/ aged 66 yrs 2 mos & 27 ds./ He left a wife, 8 children, and/ many friends, to mourn their loss,/ on each side of him lie emblems/ of his severe trials./ He was a sincere christian/ and died in the glorious hope/ of a blessed immortality/ Tis finished.--legal worship ends/ And gospel ages run/ All old things now are past away/ And a new world begun./

bullet  Noted events in his life were:

1. Census, 1820, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, United States. Robert Walkup is 26-44, living with 4 males under 10, 2 males 10-15, 2 females under 10, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 16-25, 1 female 26-44, and 12 slaves (Mecklenburg Co, p199)

2. Story. 4272 Robert Walkup and Elizabeth Johnston Hoey were the parents of Samuel Hoey Walkup. Robert (1780-1846) was the son of James Walkup/Wahab and Margaret Pickens. Elizabeth (1786-1826) was the daughter of James Hoey and Elizabeth Johnston. In 1823 a housefire consumed Samuel's 4 older brothers and a cousin. Robert erected a monument to the five boys in Waxhaw Cemetery. After Samuel's mother died, Robert married Dorcas Montgomery (1805-1891) in 1827, and launched his second set of children. He sired 22 in all, 13 by Elizabeth, 9 by Dorcas; at his death only eight were alive. One of Samuel's half sisters was Sarah Walkup Belk Simpson, mother of William Henry Belk, founder of Belk Stores.

3. Cemetery: Old Waxhaw Cemetery, Lancaster County, South Carolina. Inscription on a tablet at Old Waxhaw Cemetery:
Sacred/ To the Memory of/ JAMES ALEXANDER WALKUP./ aged 15 years 3 months and 15 days/ ALSO/ JOHN HOEY W. aged 12 Years and 9 Months./ JOSEPH W. aged 10 Years 8 Months and 16 days/ ROBERT I. W. aged 8 Years 9 Months & 20 days/ AND/ JOSEPH HUEY, aged 19 Years 11 Months & 11 days./ All of whom expired amidst flames Feby the 7th 1823/ Leaving a Father Mother two Brothers and three Sisters/ Together with an extensive circle of friends who will/ long deplore their irreparable loss./ Never were the prospects of Youth brighter than theirs/ Admired by their friends and beloved by those connected/ to them by nearer ties! they walked honour'd thro' the/ unrugged paths of life. but alas! a chilling frost came/ the lovely flowers were blighted! they drooped and died/ Reader Let a tear of sympathy flow from your eye./ My Sons are dead! by fire consum'd./ Beyond all power to Save,/ Their Souls have gone beyond the tomb./ Their bodies to the grave!/ These Youths were pleasant in their lives,/ In love they spent their breath./ They fell a mournful Sacrifice./ Divided not in death./ The bitter tears that constant flow./ And roll down my careworn cheeks./ Is but a vain and empty show./ Of what my heart bespeaks./ Where e'er I turn my weeping eyes./ Some object I behold./ Which speaks my Sad calamity,/ My miseries unfold!/ With heavy heart I view the Spot,/ Where late was my abode./ The very trees bespeak my lot./ All parch'd where proud they stood!/ Oh! GOD of mercy! can it be./ That I deserve such pain./ Have I forgot thy love to me./ Or aught I to complain./ The Souls of these. my darling Boys./ To thine own bosom take,/ Thou cans't create, thou cans't destroy./ Thou gav'st, and thou can'st take./ This is the only tribute that can now be paid to their/ Memory it is Erected with heart rending feelings/ By their affectionate Father.
