8. Story. Baxter Welch of Bear Creek gave the land for a one-room schoolhouse in the early 1900s, as long as the land was used for a schoolhouse. The school, no longer standing, sat a few hundred yards behind the old Milo Councilman homeplace (located on what is now Ronald Scott Road near Harper's Crossroads). The Welch schoolhouse was actually two rooms, with first through fourth grades in one room, and fifth through seventh grades in another. In many cases, the older students helped the teacher with the younger students. Early on, anyone who finished seventh grade was eligible to teach the next year. Ada Councilman was one of the students who did that. School started at the end of October and lasted for six months. Milo and Baxter gave monies for the Blackwood School, across the road from the Welch School. The Blackwood School was for grades 8-11, and tuition was charged, but it closed prior to 1930. The article has two photos. The first is of Welch School students in 1911, and includes Nellie Beal, Callie Beal, Claude Beal, Lessie Beal, Effie Welch, Gails Welch, Marvin Councilman, Charlie Councilman, Wilburn Councilman, Rossie Scott, Faye Scott, Hobart Scott, Nellie Scott, and Eva Scott. The second is of Welch School students in 1914, and includes Joe Councilman, Emma Councilman, Ada Councilman, Ruby Councilman, Bessie Councilman, Clyde Welch, Lola Welch, Gails Welch, and Ernest Welch.
