Notes in this source (not in the family bible) cite North Carolina Troops, Vol 1, p294 to say that he was a Private, enlisted in New Hanover County on 31 Mar 1864, captured at Fort Fisher on 15 Jan 1864 [sic, should be 1865], confined at Elmira NY where he died 5 Apr 1865 of chronic diarrhea.

5. Military Service: Confederate Soldier, 31 Mar 1864. Valentine Downing was a Private in Civil War in Co H of 2nd NC Artillery. Enlisted 31 Mar 1864 at Fort Fisher for 3 years. Captured 15 Jan 1865 at Fort Fisher. (Compiled Confederate Service Records at National Archives)
