11. Story. S.C.Beal was born on a farm in Bear Creek Township on March 4 1889. His only formal education was secured in a two room county school building four miles from his home. He began work in his teens as a laborer for Rhinehardt & Dennis Construction Company on the Norfolk & Southern Railway in the Mt Gilead NC section. Within a short time he was promoted to supervisory work on his first construction job, and in the next few years following was employed in this capacity in the construction of many railway jobs. He followed railway construction into the mountainous regions of Utah, and then returned to his native state to take supervisory work in the building of the dam across the Pee Dee River at Badin. During the WWI years he was employed by the DuPont Powder Company in the building of a plant at Hopewell, Virginia. However, railway construction, and, no doubt, the "yen" to be nearer the girl at home, brought him to Greensboro where he was instrumental in building the Southern Railway's Pomona Yards. While employed there, on June 3, 1917, he married Miss Lola Welch, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. B. N Welch of Bear Creek. To this union were born two daughters, now Mrs V J Dark of Bear Creek, and Mrs Kathleen Parks of Greensboro. In 1918, Mr Beal returned to Chatham Co. In 1925, he and his brother, N C Beal, formed a partnership known as Beal Brothers. With a few mules, wheelers, etc., they succeeded in completing their first contract -- the building of the road bed on a state highway project between Hope Mills and St Pauls, NC. In 1926, the company completed seventeen miles of roadway grading between Elizabethtown and Acme with mules, an Erie steam shovel, and a Caterpiller tractor. In 1928, twenty miles of roadway grading between Zebulon and Selma were completed with one hundred mules and the aid of two power shovels and two Caterpiller tractors. By 1936 all mules had been replaced by mechanical equipment. S C Beal died suddenly on 8 April 1942. The company was liquidated after the completion of all outstanding contracts. Mr. Beal was a lifelong member of Fall Creek Baptist Church. (From "North Carolina Roads and Their Builders", Capus Waynick, Edwards & Broughton publishers, Raleigh, 1952, p207)
