5. Property, 1871, Cumberland County, North Carolina, United States. John D Williams to William Henry Downing, 186 acres (Cumberland Co book 68, page 625)

6. Story, Cir 1871. When Henry and Sophia got married, Henry was $50 in the hole. He bought 40 acres in Alligator Swamp. This original property was poor farm land. He had that for 4 years before he bought more. He was hemmed in by the other landowners in the area, and could not get any more land there. He bought some land in a new area [Flea Hill] (the deed has a hand-drawn revenue seal on it), and started giving out mortgages to other people, gradually getting more and more land when people were unable to pay the loan back. He eventually had enough so that each of the children had a farm. The deed book at the county courthouse has a section where on each of several pages most of the entries are these mortgages. Later in his life, as he acquired property he assigned it immediately to one of the children, and retained life-time rights to use of the land. So, when he died, his son Empie (as executor) did not have to worry much about who got what, since they already owned it. (per Lenward Hair)

7. Property, 1875, Alligator Swamp, Cumberland County, North Carolina, United States. Neil S Ray to William H Downing, 58.1 acres in Alligator Swamp (Cumberland Co book 62, page 412)

8. Residence, 1875, Alligator Swamp, Cumberland County, North Carolina, United States. Family lived with Henry's father at first, at Briar Branch. Purchased about 50 acres in Alligator Swamp in 1875 and moved there. Alligator Swamp is about halfway between Vander and Briar Branch Church. DeLorme map shows Big Alligator Swamp SW of Cedar Creek Church in Cumberland Co, and Little Alligator Swamp south of that on the county line with Bladen Co. (per Lenward Hair)

9. Story, Cir 1875. Henry came home from the war with a drinking problem, and once had a buggy accident while carrying his young son (and drunk). He realized he could have killed his son, and he stopped drinking (recollection of Lenward Hair). In another version of the story, he crosses a bridge, says to a bottle "It's either you or me, and its not going to be me", and throws the bottle into the creek (recollection of Gladys Haywood Lindley).

12. Property, 1885, Flea Hill Twp, Cumberland County, North Carolina, United States. Jane S Elliot to William Henry Downing, 398 acres in Flea Hill (Cumberland Co Deed book 77, p612)

Henry purchased 398 acres in Flea Hill in 1885 (paid for half at time of purchase) from Jane Elliot (widow) -- she was living in Rockingham at the time. The deed has a hand drawn revenue stamp. The deed refers to a big ditch, which is the canal that Henry deepened to drain the land. (per Lenward Hair)

Deed book 77, page 613, cancelled mortgage to Evans, 398 acres.

13. Property, 1885, Cumberland County, North Carolina, United States. William Henry Downing mortgage from George W Johnson, 38.1 acres in Alligator Swamp (Cumberland Co deed book 77, page 611)

14. Story, Cir 1885, Flea Hill Twp, Cumberland County, North Carolina, United States. 607 Moved and established home three miles east of Fayetteville [at Flea Hill]. Land was originally covered with heavy forest and mostly under water. Initiated law suit which finally went to U.S. Supreme Court, establishing landowner's right to drain his land into the nearest available stream or body of water. Raised corn on drained swamps on Cape Fear River. Became known as "Corn King Downing."

15. Residence, 1885, Flea Hill Twp, Cumberland County, North Carolina, United States. The Flea Hill property is located on Downing Rd (NC Rt 1834), E of Fayetteville, N of Rt 24, between Fayetteville and Interstate 95. Downing Road still exists (in 2009). For part of the way, one of the old canals runs next to the road. The canal was a ditch prior to Henry's enlarging it to drain the land.

The house at Flea Hill was a single floor, unlike most houses of the late 19th century. Originally there were four large rooms off a very wide central hall, but later a foyer and a large parlor were added. Other additions included a kitchen, a dining room, and a "little room", joined to the main house by a wide L shaped breezeway. Porches across the front and east sides of the house met on the corner in a circle somewhat resembling a cuppola. The porch was ornamented with a balustrade and typical Victorian gingerbread. Four chimneys each serving two rooms heated the main rooms. A wood range in the kitchen cooked food and heated the kitchen. The house and inner yard was surrounded by a white picket fence. The site of the house was a knoll of several acres shaded by large oak trees. A hard-surfaced road named the Downing Road led from the Clinton Road, now highway number 24, to the mailbox at the edge of the grove where it made a right angle turn and followed the canal upstream until it joined a crossroad between the Dunn and Clinton Roads. A painting of this home is at Woodlin. I have a slide of that painting.

There was a milk house beside the back gate, with troughs all around the inside wall which were filled with water and in which sat crocks of milk. The water was drained when it became heated and cool water was pumped into the troughs from a pump which was just inside the door. There was also a potato house used to store layers of potatoes over the winter, and a chicken house. There was a smoke house, and a giant iron wash pot between the smoke house and the milk house. Clothes were boiled in this pot weekly, and it was also used to make lard and "cracklins". Between the wash pot and the milk house was a large table where the hogs were cut up. There were stables, and a large grape arbor behind the stables.
