6. Story. 2302 Sampson Allen was a skilled artist who painted murals of large size over fireplaces and on walls. He was an expert millwright and was one of the leaders in the Snow Camp Foundry, and later with others set up the Fairmont Foundry which operated before the Civil War. An old apple variety called the Sampson Allen Apple was named for him. It is not clear how this apple originated, but is believed to have come from a seed that was planted. Some of this variety is still growing in Alamance and Chatham Counties today. Some have said it is of the russett coat type and others say it is similar to the Seneca Orange. It ripens about the time of late wheat harvest.
