Obituary. 2398 "Grandmother Lindley - Now we have to record the solemn fact that Mary Lindley, "Grandmother" in fact, and in affection to so many, has left us and gone to her permanent and happy home, having sojurned in this world nearly 97 years. She was born in Guilford Co., North Carolina, July 6th 1802. She was the daughter of Jonathan and Ann Hadley, and the second in age of a large family of children, all of whom have preceded her except one brother and one sister in Indiana, and Washington Hadley here in Whittier.
On September 19, 1819, she was married to David Lindley, in North Carolina, and, in the course of nearly sixty years of wedded life, they became the parents and watchful Christian guardians of twelve children; eleven of whom grew to adult age, and nine of whom were married. Only four survive their mother; one in Whittier, Mr. Cyrus Lindley, and three in eastern lands. The eldest was the late Milton Lindley who wsa one of the leading pioneers of Los Angeles, and who preceded her about four years ago.
In 1832 Grandmother, with her husband and six children migrated to the west; sojourning one winter in Ohio, then settling near Monrovia, Ind., where they remained until 1865, when they moved to New Providence, Iowa, where her husband died in 1877, aged nearly 78 years. She has lived with her children and grandchildren in California since 1887.
... The funeral service was conducted a Friends church in Whittier at 11 a.m. Saturday ... Dr. Walter Lindley, L. M. Baldwin, Oscar Baldwin and Horace Baldwin, grandsons of the deceased, and T. E. Newlin and Emmon Hadley, her nephews, served as pallbearers.
Of near relatives there were in attendance from Los Angeles, Dr. Walter Lindley, Mary E. and Ida B. Lindly, T. E. Newlin and family, Ella Monroe, Albert Hadley and wife, Elbridge and R. A. Stewart and wives, and from Pasadena, Wm. G. Strang and family.
