9. Story. 2379 Solomon Allen completed studies in medicine at a school in his home state of North Carolina. He was a physician as well as a veterinarian. Since a doctor in those days did not receive much money because of a limited practice, he also cultivated his farm near Snow Camp, NC.

10. Story. 2380 Facilities for medical education in North Carolina before 1850 were limited to preceptorial training. There were at least fifteen apprenticeship schools in the state. The preceptors were without exception outstanding and highly respected practitioners. Information about these schools is very limited, and so it is not possible to estimate with any accuracy the number of doctors trained by them. It is said that many of them later went to chartered medical schools from which they eventually graduated and received the M.D. degree (taken from the NC Medical Society, 1972).

11. Story. 2380 It is not known where Dr. Solomon Allen received his training. Many NC doctors in the early 19th century completed their education at the University of PA Medical School, or Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia.

12. Occupation: Physician, Farmer.

13. Religion: Quaker.

14. Story. 2380 Picture available in Allen book.
