1. Story. 2184 Enlisted Revolutionary War, orderly sergeant under Captains Davis and John Foster, in battle at the Hanging Rock and several skirmishes. Began signing himself Hugh McCain Sr after the death of his father, including his will, but he is Hugh McCain Jr on his gravestone. Children Andrew Baskin, Hugh Baskin, John Baskin, Elizabeth, William Baskin, Eleanor, Joseph Baskin, James Baskin (yes, all the boys have the same middle name). Details on children and descendents also listed.

2. Census, 1810, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, United States. Hugh McCain is age 45 and over, living with 1 male under 10, 2 males 10-16, 2 males 16-26, 1 female 10-16, 1 female 16-26, 1 female 45 and over, and 2 slaves (Mecklenburg Co, p476)

Story. 1384 The children of Hugh McCain, Jr., were Mrs. Jerry Blackman, Mrs. Andrew Taylor, Hugh McCain, who was the father of John S., and Mrs James Huey; Andrew, who moved to Missouri; James, who moved to Mississippi; John, who moved to Illinois; William, who moved to Georgia, and Joseph, the father of Mrs. Eurd Belk and of Mrs. Joe McNeely, the mother of James McNeely and of Henry Shute of Monroe.

6. Document, 4 Oct 1853. Hugh's son Hugh B McCain filed a claim for his father's Revolutionary War pension benefits on 4 Oct 1853. He claims that Hugh married Isabell Baskins, he was a soldier in the Revolutionary War, he was in battle of Hanging Rock, he was a resident of Mecklenburg Co when he entered the Army. Pages from the family bible are included in the application, showing marriage to Isbell on 23 Jan 1787 and names and birthdates of their children and some death dates. The bible shows Hugh b 17 Nov 1761, d 6 Mar 1832, Isabel b 28 Oct 1762, d 18 Jul 1842, children Andrew Baskin, Hugh B, John, Elizabeth, William, Ellenner, Joseph, James. Hugh's claim was not allowed because there was no proof of the claimed Revolutionary War service. Follow-on documents include a certification from the SC Comptroller General Office, dated 5 Feb 1856, that Hugh appears in the payroll records of Capt Saml Martin's troop in the Regt Light Dragoons of General Sumter's Brigade as having served 10 months. Samuel H Walkup sent a follow-up letter asking status of the claim on 14 Aug 1857. (Revolutionary War Pension Applications #R6593 in National Archives)
