Tombstone says "Sacred / To the memory of / John M'Cain Senr. / who departed this life / on the 6th of March 1835 in the 82nd year of his age. / He was an affectionate husband / kind father, obliging neighbor, / an humble professor of Religion, / also a Soldier / of the Revolutionary War, / leaving a wife, six daughters, / one son and many freinds / to lament his death."

Descendants were Rebecca, who married a Tucker and moved to Alabama; Sarah, who married Andrew Nisbit; Elizabeth, who first married a Robinson and then a Rogers and moved to Mississippi; Jane, who married first a Walker, then a Locke, and moved to Yorkville, SC; Margaret, who married George McCain, her cousin, and Hugh McCain, who was known as Big Hugh.

4. Story. 1389 Children are Eleanor m. James Gault, Elizabeth m. 1st Robinson, 2nd James Rogers, Hugh Huey m 1st Mary Thompson, 2nd Mary Ramsey, John, mary, Jane m 1st John Walker, 2nd Willis Lock, Agnes, Margaret Huey m. her cousin George McCain, Sarah m Andrew Nisbet, Rebecca m. 1st James Harton, 2nd unknown Tucker, Matthew died young.

5. Story. 2134 Served with North Carolina troops under Capt Hughins, John Rogers, and Col Irwin, Ezekial Polk and others during Revolutionary War. Prisoner, jailed Camden SC. Served 11 months 26 days. Received war pension Feb 1833. Lived about 8 miles south of Waxhaw. Before Revolution, built a mill on Cain Creek near his father's house. According to J D C McCain, this old mill became "one of the most noted places in Union County and was still running in 1930." Children (in order) Eleanor, Elizabeth, Hugh Huey, John, Mary, Jane, Agnes, Margaret Huey, Sarah, Rebecca, and Matthew. Details and descendants of these children also available.

6. Document. John was born 10 Dec 1753 in Mecklenburg Co, NC. He enlisted in Meck Co on Aug 1780, served 3 months in Capt Hugins' Company, Col Irwin's NC Regt; later time in Capt John Rogers Co, Col Ezekiel Polk's Regt. Was captured and held prisoner for 3 months in jail at Camden SC. His pension claim was approved 23 Nov 1832 while John was still living in Mecklenburg Co. He died 9 Mar 1835. He had married Mary on 23 Mar 1780. She was allowed his pension on 2 Nov 1839 when she was aged 75 yrs. (Revolutionary War Pension Applications, #W9543, at National Archives)

7. Property, 28 Jul 1782, Camden District, South Carolina, United States. 2135 John McCain [maybe this one] conveyed land to James Simpson by deed. This is referenced in a deed dated 17 July 1792 from James Simpson of Cedar Creek to James Sprunt for 200 acres on N side of Catabaw River on Cedar Creek, originally granted to Frederick Touchstone on 14 Sep 1771?, conveyed to said James Simpson by John McCain by deed 28 July 1782, on E side Touchstones's Branch (Lancaster Co Deed Book C&E, p83-84).
