9. Story. 2002 Text of a letter from John N McCain to William S McCain [not this one], dated 10 June 1886: Dear Nephew, ... My father's mother was Nelly Johnson, a daughter of George Johnson. ... Grandpa Wm McCain was born about 1748 and died about 1824 and was buried at Tirzah Church, just inside Lancaster County, SC. His marble headstone is not more than 20 feet from the cemetary gate. I recollect him better the time they laid him in the coffin than any other time. He was a portly old gentleman. He and his wife Eleanor Johnson had seven prolific children; Sallie, wife of John Walker, George and John whose families are still largely in the Waxhaws. Betsy and Nelly married Alex and Robert Huey and settled near Hamilton, Harris County, Georgia. Their descendants are largely there and in southeast Alabama. Jenny who married Robert Hood and moved to Texas where she died of cholera not many days after landing at Harrisbury. Nearly all her family are in Texas. My father, Hugh Johnson McCain, was the eldest son in the family. My Grandpa McCain was a son of Hugh McCain and Eleanor Nutt. ... Your Uncle John.
