1. Appearance in Document, 21 Mar 1753, Edgecombe County, North Carolina Colony. 2058 James Downing [maybe this one] shown as sworn chain carrier..

2. Story. Note Edgecombe County deeds prior to 1759 are stored in Halifax County courthouse (Halifax was created from Edgecombe in 1758, but the county seat of Edgecombe county became the county seat of Halifax county and the records stayed where they were)

3. Property, 27 Mar 1761, Tarboro, Edgecombe County, North Carolina Colony. 2060 The commissioners of the town of Tarborough deeded to James Downing [maybe this one] of Edgecombe Co, for 4 pounds proclamation money, two lots, each one half acre, on St Patrick's and Church streets, and known as lots 85 and 31 in the plan of the town. (deed book 1-179).

4. Property, 14 Sep 1761, Edgecombe County, North Carolina Colony. 2061 Misc Land Office Papers. Entry for James Downing [maybe this one], 700 acres in Edgcomb Co near the forks in the Roads that lead to Town Creek and the Court house, joining both sides of the Road.

5. Appearance in Document, 21 Nov 1761, Edgecombe County, North Carolina Colony. 2059 James Downing [maybe this one] is sworn chain carrier on survey for William Mace.

6. Property, 25 Mar 1762, Tarboro, Edgecombe County, North Carolina Colony. 2060 James Downing [maybe this one] sold to Robert Williams, for 60 pounds proclamation money, one lot in the Town of Tarborough known as lot 85 in the plan of the town (deed book 1-255).

7. Property, 1 Jan 1763, Johnston County, North Carolina Colony. 2062 James Downing [maybe this one] granted 374 acres in Johnston County on both sides of little River and on the S side of great Buffilo Swamp, joining William Nairn and Ambros Blackburn.

8. Property, 4 Mar 1765, Halifax County, North Carolina Colony. Newel Drew of Halifax Co deeded 172 acres to James Downing [maybe this one] of Halifax Co, joining Bay Branch and Little Swamp (deed book 10-68, cited in The Deeds of Halifax Co, NC, 1758-1771 by Stephen Bradley)

9. Story. Lenward Hair says - legend places the parents of James Downing in New England in the early 1700s and then has them move to the Virginia colony. It is uncertain if James Downing was brought to NC by his parents or if he came on his own. Prior to the revolution he was in Green County, on Contentea Creek near the present Snow Hill, established and raising a family. His wife's name may have been Mary.

10. Appearance in Document, 23 Jan 1785, Edgecombe County, North Carolina, United States. 2063 James Downing [maybe this one] is referred to in the will of John Webb (will book C, p19).

11. Probate, 1785, Sampson County, North Carolina, United States. An estate settlement was done for James Downing [maybe this one]. Major William Vann administered the estate. This from notes of Lenward Hair, citing Sampson County court minutes.

12. Appearance in Document, 7 Mar 1795, Edgecombe County, North Carolina, United States. 2064 James Downing [maybe this one] is referred to in the will of John Lawrence (Will book C, p 322).

13. Census, 1800, Edgecombe County, North Carolina, United States. James Downing Sr is in Edgecombe Co, p193.

14. Property, 22 Feb 1806, Edgecombe County, North Carolina, United States. 2065 James Downing Sr issues a deed to James Downing Jr (Deed book 14-18).

15. Property, 18 Apr 1807, Edgecombe County, North Carolina, United States. 2065 On 18 Apr [not sure about year, might be 1807, might be 1787], James Downing Sr sold land to Amy Downing. The deed is witnessed by James Downing Jr and Elizabeth Downing (Deed book 12-223).

16. Appearance in Document, 21 May 1807, Edgecombe County, North Carolina, United States. 2065 A deed states that George Downing was son of James Downing, Sr (Deed book 12-157).

17. Will, 17 Mar 1808, Edgecombe County, North Carolina, United States. 1402 The will of James Downing, Sr, was prepared 17 Mar 1808 and processed in the August court 1808. The will is in will book D, page 322. The will includes that James is "...being sick and in a low state of health...", and refers to daughters Chrischaney Little, Lydia Edmondson, Elizabeth Johnson (who each received 5 shillings), daughter Mary Downing (who received the beds and furniture), son James Downing, daughter Courtney Cook, sons Joseph Downing and George Downing (who each received 5 shillings).

18. Probate, 1 May 1808, Edgecombe County, North Carolina, United States. 1403 Inventory of estate of James Downing Sr, taken by James Downing Jr, exr., mentioned in Nov court 1809.

19. Probate, 1 Jun 1808, Edgecombe County, North Carolina, United States. 1403 Account of sale of part of the property held by James Downing Jr, exr. for estate of James Downing Sr, 1 Jun 1808. Buyers were George Downing, Mary Downing, and James Downing.
