17. Story. 1367 A prominent Bacon family in the Saxapahaw area was Joe Bacon's family [different Joe Bacon]. Joe [the prominent one] was descended from a Methodist circuit preacher in NC. His son, Calvin Bacon, also a Methodist and a civil engineer, left NC to work in Georgia and later in Illinois at the time of the Civil War. He fought on the side of the North while his brothers opposed him in the service of the South. Calvin, wounded in the war, later moved to Texas [D W Gaddy doubts this, Calvin died in Missouri] where he died from his wounds, but not before he persuaded his young son, Joe, then merely a boy, to promise to take his younger brother and mother back to NC when he became old enough to do so. Joe brought the Bacon family back to Burlington and Saxapahaw where he started to work in the cotton mill as a sweeper boy and later rose through the ranks to become a mill manager for Cannon Mills in Kannapolis. Joe and his daughter both attended Trinity College at the same time. His son, Worth Bacon, became a journalist for the Winston-Salem Journal-Sentinel. Joe worked with Samuel E Woody and Bill Straughan to form the Saxapahaw Union Church in the early 1880s, which later became Saxapahaw Methodist Church. Later prominent members of the founding group were William F Lindley and Nancy Teague. The one-room church building was completed in 1890.

18. Story. Joseph (Joe) Daniel Bacon was son of Calvin (1819-1869) and Louisa Pugh (15 Aug 1836-1919). In 1937, Joe Bacon [who D W Gaddy knew as "Grandpa Bacon"] wrote some of his early memories of frontier life, the seeing of Lincoln in his casket on the funeral train that passed through, the return of his father, etc. D W Gaddy has a photocopy of the original manuscript. (e-mail from D W Gaddy, grandson of Joseph Bacon, on 18 Apr 2000)
